Let the 2020 Projects Begin...Kind of

Updated: Feb 17, 2020

2020 has officially begun, and after living in our home for over a year now, we’re starting to prioritize the projects we want to attack before this year comes to a close. I’m a believer that setting a definitive goal will make it more likely that you’ll actually make progress on something.

One of our goals this year is to renovate our straight-out-of-the-70s basement into a useful, comfy living space and possible income property by the end of the year. That said, we also don’t want to spend our life savings recreating a space that will either be used by someone else or that will not be used on a regular basis. And let me tell you, in its current state, it has a LOT of potential. Well, that is the nice way of saying it.

Our first step in this process is getting the bathroom down there up to par so that space can be independent of the rest of the house. Thankfully for us, there is already a huge existing powder room we can work with.

Yeah, I know, it looks a little like a horror movie bathroom. It is kind of horrible because I found a giant, dead cockroachy / crickety thing in there the other day. Oh, and the toilet doesn’t flush properly. Not great qualities for a bathroom, right?

We’ve got big plans, though, and as you can see below, lots of options! We are going with option 1, but here are a few other examples for all of you out there who may need some inspiration for your next bathroom project. The vanity is already en route, we’re just left with ordering….everything else. Did I also mention we have fallen away from doing everything DIY style? I don’t know how anyone gets major reno projects done when they have little ones. Maybe those people are less tired than me...or more maybe they’re more determined?

We ultimately would like to move the toilet out of the alcove and put the shower under the stairs. The example below is not my photo, but it gives you the idea of what look we are going for. The toilet will move between the shower and vanity, and there will be recessed lights and drywall where there isn't tile.

See something you like? Everything is linked below, but with the disclaimer that I have not personally purchased these items yet and cannot vouch for their quality. However, I do read reviews and research, so these are real items I am considering and would purchase for our home.

If you like my designs and want one of your own, I’m happy to do personalized mood boards for whatever room you are looking to style!
